Monarch Defender vs Blackbridge Motors

The two American shops that build Defenders from scratch. One leads with chassis engineering; one delivers complete new-body trucks with everything published.

The short answer

The short answer

Monarch Defender and Blackbridge Motors are the two American shops that build Defenders from scratch rather than restoring donors. Blackbridge engineers its own modern chassis in Connecticut, from around $170,000, and also sells chassis, parts, and kits. Monarch is a single-focus commission shop in Illinois: brand-new aluminum body, 430 to 650 hp GM V8, published pricing from $250,000, and a two-year warranty.

Two from-scratch philosophies

Blackbridge deserves the respect of a direct comparison: its Mark-series program builds Defenders on a proprietary, in-house-engineered modern chassis with Dynatrac axles, and more than a decade of R&D shows in the product. The engine ladder mirrors Monarch's, LS3, LT1, and the 650 hp LT4.

Monarch's from-scratch runs through the body: a brand-new aluminum body on a new, corrosion-protected chassis, built as a complete vehicle about 60 times a year. One shop leads with chassis engineering, the other with a complete new-vehicle build; both are legitimately building rather than restoring.

Focus: complete trucks vs a broader business

The structural difference is focus. Blackbridge's business spans complete builds, chassis sales to other builders, parts, and kit programs. Monarch does one thing: complete, single-owner Defender commissions, start to finish, with the same team accountable for every truck. Monarch publishes its price band ($250,000 to $350,000 and up) and a two-year bumper-to-bumper warranty; Blackbridge's entry pricing has been reported from about $170,000, with no warranty terms published as of August 2026.

Where Blackbridge is the better fit

Choose Blackbridge if the chassis-engineering story is what excites you, you are in the Northeast, or you want a lower entry point into a built-not-restored Defender. Choose Monarch for the finished-vehicle version of the same conviction: a new-body commission at a published price, with published coverage, from a shop that only builds complete trucks.
