The short answer

The short answer

Monarch Defender and ICON 4x4 compete for the same $250,000-class restomod budget with different vehicles. ICON, in Los Angeles, is America's most famous restomod house, building Broncos ($264,000 to $296,000) and Land Cruisers ($231,000 to $297,000) on a roughly one-to-two-year waitlist. Monarch builds the classic Land Rover Defender, which ICON does not offer, ground-up on a brand-new aluminum body in 6 to 12 months from $250,000.

The most famous name vs the missing vehicle

ICON earned its halo: Jonathan Ward's shop set the standard the word 'restomod' now implies, and its BR (Bronco) and FJ (Land Cruiser) lines carry decades of obsessive engineering and celebrity garages behind them. If the brief is 'the best-known builder, any vehicle,' the search ends in Chatsworth.

But ICON does not build Defenders. A buyer who wants the classic Land Rover silhouette is outside its lineup entirely, and that is the buyer Monarch builds for: the Defender, ground-up on a brand-new aluminum body, with a GM V8 from 430 to 650 hp.

Queue, specification, and price

The price bands overlap almost exactly: ICON's published ranges run $231,000 to $297,000, Monarch's band is $250,000 to $350,000 and up. The calendars do not: ICON's waitlist has run one to two years, while a Monarch commission delivers in 6 to 12 months. ICON builds within its defined lines and configurator; Monarch's specification is fully open, chosen with the team building the truck.

Where ICON is the better fit

If you want a Bronco or a Land Cruiser, or simply want to own an ICON, nothing substitutes; the brand is the product and it is earned. If the vehicle you actually want is a classic Defender, ICON has never been the answer, and Monarch is the specialist: same money, shorter wait, your specification.
