The short answer

Monarch Defender and Osprey Custom 4x4 both build LS3 V8 Defenders in the US, but at different tiers. Osprey restores donor Defenders from a defined lineup starting around $170,000 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Monarch builds ground-up on a brand-new aluminum body from $250,000, with open specification, a 650 hp option, and a published two-year warranty.

Same engine, different truck underneath

Both shops fit the 430 hp GM LS3 V8, so the spec sheets look closer than the vehicles are. An Osprey is a donor Defender, restored well by a shop with more than twenty years of experience and a consistent house style. A Monarch is built new: a brand-new aluminum body on a new, corrosion-protected chassis, with nothing structural carried over from a thirty-year-old truck.

That difference is invisible in photos and unmistakable over years of ownership. It is also where most of the price gap between the two lives.

A defined lineup vs an open commission

Osprey builds from an established model lineup (OC90, OC110, OC130), which keeps its process efficient and its pricing strong. Monarch runs the opposite model: about 60 single-owner commissions a year with fully open specification, where the color, leather, veneers, and hardware are decided with you, not chosen from a menu.

What the price gap buys

An Osprey starts roughly $80,000 below a Monarch, and for a buyer who wants a well-priced, US-restored LS3 Defender, that is a genuinely strong deal. Monarch's band, $250,000 to $350,000 and up, buys the new body and chassis, the open specification, the 460 hp LT1 and 650 hp supercharged LT4 options that Osprey does not catalog, and a published two-year bumper-to-bumper warranty. Osprey does not publish warranty terms on its site as of August 2026.

Where Osprey is the better fit

Choose Osprey for value: it is one of the strongest prices in the country for a US-restored V8 Defender, it offers a Cummins diesel for overlanders, and its two decades of builds speak for themselves. Choose Monarch when you have outgrown 'restored' and want 'built': a new truck, specified to one owner, warranted in writing.

Unrestored classic Defender with faded paint and rust

Traditional Restoration

Original everything: the loose steering, the weak brakes, the leaks, the smell of gasoline. Beautiful in a museum, exhausting on the road. You will drive it twice a summer.

Typical restomod Defender with a fresh repaint

Typical Restomod

New parts bolted into a thirty-year-old body. Better, but it still rattles, still rusts, and still doesn't drive like a modern truck. You will drive it on nice weekends.

Finished Monarch Defender build

Monarch Defender (us)

A ground-up build on a brand-new aluminum body: a GM V8 with up to 650 HP, modern suspension, brakes, and climate control. It looks like 1990 and drives like 2026. You will fight your family for the keys.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Monarch Defender and Osprey?

Osprey Custom 4x4 restores donor Defenders from a defined lineup in Wilmington, North Carolina, from around $170,000. Monarch Defender builds ground-up on a brand-new aluminum body and new chassis in Illinois from $250,000, with open specification, LT1 and 650 hp LT4 upgrades, and a published two-year warranty.

Why is a Monarch more expensive than an Osprey?

The price gap buys a different construction method: a brand-new aluminum body and new chassis instead of a restored donor, a fully open single-owner specification, higher-output engine options up to the 650 hp LT4, and a published two-year bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Looking for an alternative to Osprey Custom 4x4?

If you want a Defender built new rather than restored, Monarch Defender is the US-built step up: same LS3 starting point, brand-new body and chassis, open specification, and a two-year warranty, from $250,000.
