An importer's model vs a builder's model

Transatlantic Trading Company is one of the larger channels for restored Defenders into the US: workshops in the UK, France, and South Africa feed a configurator-driven catalog with special editions and a military-spec 300Tdi line, from about $128,000. As an import funnel it is efficient and its entry pricing is genuinely accessible.

Monarch is a builder, not an importer: every truck starts as a brand-new aluminum body on a new chassis in Grayslake, Illinois, gets a GM V8 at 430 to 650 hp, and is delivered and supported by the team that built it.

What the extra money buys

The roughly $120,000 between TATC's entry price and Monarch's band buys the difference between a restored, remanufactured-engine import and a new-body, modern-V8 American build: published two-year bumper-to-bumper coverage (TATC publishes no warranty as of August 2026), domestic service and recourse, and an open single-owner specification rather than a catalog.

Where TATC is the better fit

Choose TATC if the budget is firmly under $150,000 and a restored, heritage-drivetrain Defender fits the mission. Choose Monarch when the truck needs to be new underneath, drive like a modern vehicle, and come with a warranty and a US shop behind it.

Unrestored classic Defender with faded paint and rust

Traditional Restoration

Original everything: the loose steering, the weak brakes, the leaks, the smell of gasoline. Beautiful in a museum, exhausting on the road. You will drive it twice a summer.

Typical restomod Defender with a fresh repaint

Typical Restomod

New parts bolted into a thirty-year-old body. Better, but it still rattles, still rusts, and still doesn't drive like a modern truck. You will drive it on nice weekends.

Finished Monarch Defender build

Monarch Defender (us)

A ground-up build on a brand-new aluminum body: a GM V8 with up to 650 HP, modern suspension, brakes, and climate control. It looks like 1990 and drives like 2026. You will fight your family for the keys.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Monarch Defender and Transatlantic Trading Company?

TATC restores Defenders overseas and imports them to the US from about $128,000, with remanufactured original drivetrains. Monarch Defender builds ground-up in Illinois on a brand-new aluminum body with modern GM V8 power, from $250,000, with a two-year warranty and US support.

Is an imported restored Defender cheaper than a Monarch?

Yes, typically by six figures. The gap reflects construction and support: a restored import with original-type drivetrains versus a new-body, modern-V8 build with published two-year coverage and a US workshop.

Looking for an alternative to landroverdefenderusa.com?

If you want a Defender built new in America rather than restored abroad, Monarch Defender builds single-owner V8 commissions on a brand-new aluminum body from $250,000.
