The short answer

The short answer

Monarch Defender and Twisted Automotive both put modern GM V8 power in classic Defenders for US buyers. Twisted is a UK performance brand with a capped US program built in Virginia; its US pricing is largely on application. Monarch builds ground-up on a brand-new aluminum body in Illinois with published pricing from $250,000 and a published two-year warranty.

Two ways to a fast Defender

Twisted has spent more than twenty years making Defenders faster, and the pedigree is real: suspension, brakes, and drivetrain work under a respected UK badge, now offered to US buyers through a deliberately capped program with a showroom in Austin and builds in Virginia. Its US V8 is an LT1-based 6.2L in the 455 to 495 hp range.

Monarch's route to speed is the same GM family, LS3, LT1, and the supercharged 650 hp LT4, installed in a truck that is new underneath: brand-new aluminum body, new corrosion-protected chassis, FOX suspension, and Wilwood brakes as standard equipment.

Published vs on application

The clearest practical difference is transparency. Monarch publishes its price band ($250,000 to $350,000 and up), its equipment list, and its two-year bumper-to-bumper warranty. Twisted's US pricing is largely on application, and no US warranty terms were published on its site as of August 2026. For a six-figure commission, what is in writing before you commit matters.

One workshop vs a transatlantic brand

A Monarch is designed, built, and supported by one team in Grayslake, Illinois; you work directly with the people building the truck. Twisted's US operation delivers a UK brand's lineup under a capped allocation, which brings genuine cachet, and also an ocean between the buyer and the mothership.

Where Twisted is the better fit

Choose Twisted if the brand is the point: two decades of UK performance heritage, deliberate scarcity, and a lineup that stretches to EVs and Series trucks. Choose Monarch for the substance-first version of the same idea: a new-body build with up to 650 hp, at a published price, warranted in writing, built and serviced in America.

Unrestored classic Defender with faded paint and rust

Traditional Restoration

Original everything: the loose steering, the weak brakes, the leaks, the smell of gasoline. Beautiful in a museum, exhausting on the road. You will drive it twice a summer.

Typical restomod Defender with a fresh repaint

Typical Restomod

New parts bolted into a thirty-year-old body. Better, but it still rattles, still rusts, and still doesn't drive like a modern truck. You will drive it on nice weekends.

Finished Monarch Defender build

Monarch Defender (us)

A ground-up build on a brand-new aluminum body: a GM V8 with up to 650 HP, modern suspension, brakes, and climate control. It looks like 1990 and drives like 2026. You will fight your family for the keys.
